Fossil Dunes

The fossil dunes of the Po Delta Regional Park of Veneto are very important from a historical, geomorphologic and naturalistic point of view. Besides being protected as a Site of Community Importance (SCI), they are subject to the provisions of the Italian plans known as Vincolo Idrogeologico (Hydrogeological constraint) and Vincolo paesaggistico/ambientale (Landscape/Environmental constraint).

From the historical and landscape point of view, fossil dunes make it possible to trace what was the ancient Adriatic coastline in the Etruscan age.
Over the time, these dune bars were isolated in the middle of the countryside as a result of the coastal accretion due to sedimentation of the Po river. Today, these fossil dunes are one of the last remains of the wide system of coastal landforms developed between the pre-Etruscan Age and the Early Middle Ages.

In the province of Rovigo, the only preserved fossil dunes are in the town of Porto Viro, while some dune remains can be found in the municipalities of Ariano nel Polesine (Grillara and San Basilio) and Rosolina (Volto).
